Abstract

Modern slavery refers to severe forms of exploitation such as forced labour, debt bondage, and human trafficking, practices that can be hidden deep within both global and local construction supply chains. For construction professionals in Aotearoa New Zealand, understanding modern slavery is an important and emerging area of legal compliance, responsible procurement, and ethical professional practice.

 

Drawing on his extensive experience across engineering, strategy, and government procurement, Dr Seán Barnes will explore:

About the speaker

Dr Seán Barnes is a professional engineer, leader, and strategic advisor with a strong focus on delivering positive social and environmental outcomes. He completed a PhD in Chemical Engineering/Microbiology and began his career as an Environmental Engineer in the water sector before moving into strategic advisory roles across a range of organisations, including the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA).

Seán is passionate about enabling people and organisations to create meaningful impact through their work. In 2024, he became a published author with the launch of his book The Impact Professional. He is widely recognised for his energy, collaborative approach, and practical mindset.

His current work focuses on social and sustainable procurement in the public sector, building on previous experience in social enterprise, sustainability, infrastructure, and engineering. Seán is a Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand.
