Abstract

EECA Chief Executive Dr Marcos Pelenur says energy efficiency and renewables are key to balancing the energy efficiency ‘trilemma’. We see the potential here for New Zealand. But more can be done. Immediate steps exist for every home, building, and industrial site, regardless of size or sector. Dr Pelenur will share his views on this and the current focus and priorities for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

About the speaker

Dr Marcos Pelenur became Chief Executive of EECA in September 2023. Previously he worked for the Behaviour Insights Team in Ottawa, Canada and several policy leadership positions at MBIE. Marcos has a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, is a Chartered Professional Member of Engineering New Zealand and is registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

The energy trilemma

The World Energy Trilemma describes the complex challenge of balancing three interconnected and often conflicting goals for energy systems:

  • energy security,
  • energy equity (accessibility and affordability), and
  • environmental sustainability.

Achieving a country's goals requires addressing these three pillars simultaneously, as progress in one area can sometimes negatively affect another, necessitating careful policy and planning to find a sustainable and equitable energy transition.
