Engineers for Social Responsibility Auckland Branch
Combined meeting with IET
Date and Time: Thursday 15 July 2010, 7-30pm
Venue: Room 3.407 School of Engineering, University of Auckland, 20 Symonds Street, Auckland.
Speaker: Ian Milne is a mechanical engineer, having graduated with a BE (Hons) from the University of Auckland in 2009. In the same year he began his Ph.D. also at the University of Auckland in tidal stream energy, with part of his research being conducted at the Universities of Bristol and Strathclyde. His thesis involves characterising the unsteady loads on the turbine blades, which should enable the blades to be optimised in the future. He is a committee member of ESR and the marine energy working group.
Abstract: In recent years the tidal stream energy industry has witnessed considerable development. A number of concepts by means to extract energy from the fast flowing tides have now been tested, some of which have made it to commercial deployment. However, there remain a number of technical challenges which must be overcome if electricity generation from tidal stream energy is to prove economical, such has ensuring the devices are designed optimally, and the turbines can withstand the harsh operating environment.
This presentation will explore current worldwide developments in tidal stream energy, within the commercial sector and academia. The recent NZ marine energy conference hosted by AWATEA will also be overviewed. The Ph.D. thesis being undertaken by the speaker will then be discussed, which will include highlighting the various collaborations which have been established with both the commercial sector and various universities in the United Kingdom.
