What is it you don’t understand about the meaning of ‘finite’? ESR Auckland Branch

March 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Events

Date and Time: 7.30pm, Thursday 19 March 2009.
Following the ESR Special Meeting at 7.00pm.

Where: Room 3.407, School of Engineering, University of Auckland,
20 Symonds St, Auckland.

Speakers: Gerry Coates was a founding member of ESR, way back in the
days when the “establishment” looked down on its activities with
alarm. He continues as a Life Member of ESR and was also the Chair
of the NZ Wind Energy Association Board. In his consultancy work he
has carried out work for EECA and the Parliamentary Commissioner
for the Environment and others.

Abstract: A quick look at what finite means in terms of time and quantity, and
what non-renewable and exhaustible means. The carbon cycle is
explained as sinks and sources and how the human use of fossil fuels
over the comparative blip of the last 200 years now equates to about
three times the natural flux between sinks and sources.
Is it the trigger to get us to understand the need for change global
warming, or will we let resource wars develop as we realise that our
profligate ways with energy and unlimited consumption are coming to
an early end?
What technologies and policies do we have now at our disposal now
and which ones are likely to help us make the transition to a sustainable
carbon neutral society? What behaviour changes are needed to become
a truly sustainable society? How can we stop denying that this is the
direction we need to take right now?
